Something remarkable happens this time of year. Spring happens.

Spring may not start on the exact calendar date that we feel it should. At times it seems like winter and spring arm-wrestle for dominance. But spring does eventually show its full brilliance.

Grass transforms from brown to green. Trees come to life. Birds seem to flutter and chirp about as if to hold some exciting secret. The deer that roam about now have little ones hopping around.  Even the spring rain brings with it a clean scent that wafts through the air.

Winter as something that requires constant adjustment and hunkering down.  I mean there is no amount of hot coffee that is going to compensate for having to wear my heavy coat, scarf, and snow boots. But spring gives us the permission to breathe and hit the reset button.

There are so many pressures that weigh heavy on our shoulders every day. Constant deadlines, impossible expectations, stubborn challenges, swirl about us like a relentless winter chill.

Thankfully spring happens.

It’s okay to hit the refresh button.

Here are 4 tips to start spring from within.

  1. Mute the noise

Get away from the constant noise, even for a moment. Taking a walk, shutting the door, or taking time off often helps give a sense of grounding. It helps to sort out thoughts that are meaningless versus meaningful.

  • Words and thoughts that serve to build you up = meaningful
  • Words and thoughts that serve to tear you down = meaningless

2) Check your location

When driving, there are times when I have to ask Siri, "where am I?" Assess where you are in wrestling with the daily routine, overall direction, and mindset.

Decide

  • What’s working and what’s not;
  • What’s fake and what’s real;
  • What’s important and what’s not.

3) Prepare a plan

It’s empowering to plan out steps to your next path or focus. It helps to overcome being a victim and feeling trapped. If you were to create an ideal reality what would it look like? Then write out steps to get there.

4) Repel the allergies – negativity, stagnation

Achoo! Sniffle. The allergies may run amok for those who suffer during this time of year. But there are remedies for allergies.

We must seek remedies for negativity that can set us off course and slow our momentum. Repel both internal and external voices that seek to tear you down. Shake off the heavy coat and stay positive.

My top remedies to combat stagnation:

  • Conduct random acts of kindness anonymously
  • Question assumptions especially those that serve to tear down
  • Send heartfelt “thank you” notes
  • List the things that you appreciate in life

Spring happens. Thank heavens!
