One thing is for sure, any "normal" is gone and constant turmoil will seem to be around for a while. So how are you coping? Here are some tips to help navigate 3 top challenges and re-energize you and your team.

3 Challenges and How to Get Around Them

  1. Filtering Fact From Fiction

Even before the COVID crisis year everyone having their own version of truth has always been a reality and in the workplace. When it seems that the truth is fuzzy here are some fundamental thoughts to remember:

  • Commit to an objective and fair conclusion.
  • Cross compare conflicting stories with other independent sources. Just taking one side of the story will run you the risk of making critical decisions on biased information.
  • Assume that everyone from every side of the equation has a biased view.
  • It’s okay to wait until you’ve received relevant additional information to make an informed decision.
  • “The truth is oftentimes somewhere in the middle” is a quote compliments from the employee relations investigation field.
  • What does the data show AND what does your intuition tell you? Remember even data can be wrong. What story the data is telling you could be balanced with a “gut check”. Does it sound right to you?

2. Maintaining your Value Proposition

It’s easy to get lost in the mayhem and turmoil and lose sight of direction. The mission, vision and values are supposed to serve as an anchor in good and tough times.

  • Take a “time out” and revisit your mission, vision, values and objectives. If you and/or team are getting lost in swirl call a “time out”. Revisit mission, vision, values and objectives. Remember your purpose.
  • Review what you’ve promised to deliver for your customers. Have your team brainstorm course corrections if needed.
  • Celebrate wins. If any of your team members have been able to deliver on goals during these times they deserve a big celebration!!

3. Staying "On" Despite Crisis Fatigue

Constant bombardment of bad news, panic and fear can result in deep fatigue. It becomes hard to inspire your team when you feel numb or weary. Resist allowing the global crisis from taking over your world - physically, emotionally and spiritually.

  • Remember you are stronger than this crisis.
  • Revisit what your true center is and get back to there.
  • What resources do you have to also inspire your team?
  • What self-care steps you can take to give yourself a break? Here’s tip turn off the news and take regular walks and listen to your favorite music instead.
  • Is there a buddy or mentor that can help walk alongside you providing support?

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” ~
