The sudden barking sound pierced an otherwise quiet afternoon. I immediately stepped out into the backyard to see why my dogs were barking. I looked beyond the fencing of my backyard to find large cows stampeding through my side yard. Feeling and hearing the thundering hoof beats made me grateful that I wasn’t out tending the yard at that moment. The neighbors came running behind the cows yelling their apologies to me for letting the cows out.
As a leader, if you are feeling anxious about planning for the new year perhaps it’s time to consider releasing your cows. Metaphorically speaking, “releasing your cows” can mean to let go of things that may not bring value.
Organizationally, a cow could mean projects, processes, or programs that do not add value to the mission, vision, or customers. As organizations consider downsizing people to brace for economic headwinds, why not instead downsize those projects that do nothing but moooooo? Consider freeing up and reskill staff to take on higher value projects that will drive in revenue, retain loyal customers, and staff, and create a brighter future. Just release the cows.
Releasing the cows also has meaning on a personal level as well. It is no secret that leaders and human resources professionals are beyond burned out and quitting. Why not reflect internally as to what is causing burnout and find low value things to let go of so you can rise to a different level in this new year?
Letting go of things that do not serve us well can be freeing and bring about new energy. Wouldn’t that be a nice outcome for the new year?
