You win some and you lose some. That is the way of life when it comes to casino chips, bag of chips, and leadership credibility chips. effective leadership

We each work hard on developing our leadership credibility through education, certifications, and building up years of experience. We may even get involved in volunteer activities, speaking events, writing, and networking opportunities to further develop our credibility in the field. However it takes hard work to develop credibility, it can all be lost in a flash.

In my experience I have observed many leaders rise and fall. Those that fall are those who didn’t take good care of their credibility chips.

Here are five ways to build and preserve your leadership credibility chips.

Actions

It is not just about the words. Effective leaders know that actions must be consistent with words spoken. Asking people to do things you wouldn’t do yourself is a sure fire way to lose credibility chips.

Accountability

Effective leaders hold themselves accountable for proper standards, expectations, and goals. The “do as I say and not as I do” is a manager model that possesses absolutely no credibility and will not achieve results over the long haul.

Achieve Results

Achieve results with a positive impact. Celebrate your wins with you team that helped you achieve those results. Leadership is not just about a title that gives you some entitlement to walk around with big leadership pants. Good leadership credibility chips is developing and engaging groups of people to drive all their efforts towards desired results.

Integrity and transparency

It is hard to admit when wrong. Especially for the “leader big pants” that feel they are too big to ever be wrong. That is a manager who is bankrupt with no leadership credibility chips. Taking the high road and being transparent can earn leaders a treasure of credibility chips.

Continuing developing knowledge and skill

When employees observe that you are sitting in a class, taking notes, and learning a new skill not only develops credibility but also respect. Letting employees know that you do not yet know it all, earns a wealth credibility chips.

While earning these chips can be done with diligence, remember that you can lose them a little at a time or one full swoop. When you lose them, earning them back become difficult if not impossible. When it comes to credibility chips will you be rich or bankrupt? The choice is yours.
