Starting up a business is usually what comes to mind when thinking of the word entrepreneur. But what comes to mind when we say entrepreneurial passion? According to a recent report from Business Management Daily, “It’s about doing something that bends the rules a bit and makes people look at things in an entirely new way. It’s about creativity, innovation, change and new possibilities.”

So let’s apply human resources to this concept of having entrepreneurial passion. If we have the ability to find smarter ways to do things, innovating more efficient processes, leveraging new technologies, and creating opportunities for growth sound much like adding value to an organization. It also sounds much like a results driven, out-of-the-box thinking, human resource professional.

Still not convinced? Read these questions that assess entrepreneur spirit (K. Allen, 2000).

  • Are you decisive?
  • Do you like change?
  • Are you persistent in the face of challenges?
  • Do you enjoy competing?
  • Do you deal well with stress?
  • Do you have a network of people you can tap into?

It sounds like those questions can apply to human resources as well. Here is HR-Entrepreneur questions to think about:

  • Is there a way to recruit talent more efficiently and effectively impact business results?
  • Can you find a way to still develop leaders on a shoestring budget?
  • Is there new technology that can be applied that will free up staff to deliver on higher strategic results?
  • Is there a better way to measure and manage performance?
  • Is the existing compensation structure rewarding for the right behaviors and performance?
  • Are policies help or a hindrance to achieving business results?
  • Do you have a network of professionals that you can reach out to when struggling with a challenge?

In a day when the economy is uncertain and ever growing regulations abound, it seems the status quo can lead to a company’s detriment. Apply a little entrepreneurial spirit to your work and see what gold nugget results you discover.

In what ways have you applied an entrepreneurial spirit to HR?
